What is a Sodium-treated PTFE film?
Sodium-treated PTFE film (also known as Sodium-etched PTFE film) is a specialized functional film created by treating the surface of PTFE film with a chemical etchant—such as a Sodium-naphthalene solution—to strip away some fluorine atoms and introduce polar groups. This process transforms the naturally non-stick Teflon surface into a brown, highly bondable surface. Essentially, it is a specialty material developed to solve the global challenge of bonding PTFE. The Sodium treatment triggers a chemical reaction on the otherwise inert surface, altering its polarity and rendering it "bondable," thereby enabling secure adhesion to rubber, metal, other plastics, or pressure-sensitive adhesives.

2. Key surface characteristics imparted by Sodium treatment
Surface polarity shift enabling bondability: Untreated PTFE has very low surface energy (approx. 18–20 dynes/cm), making it virtually non-stick. Sodium treatment employs a chemical reaction (defluorination and the introduction of oxygen-containing polar groups) to raise the surface energy to 50–70 dynes/cm, allowing for firm wetting and bonding with adhesives, rubber, and other materials.
Changes in surface color and morphology: The treated surface typically turns dark brown, tan, or even black, and develops a degree of microscopic roughness. This visible color change serves as a quick indicator that the material has undergone Sodium treatment.
Compatibility with various bonding processes: Once treated, the film can be bonded with elastomers (such as rubber) via thermal vulcanization to form composite diaphragms, or coated with pressure-sensitive adhesive to produce specialty tapes, thereby greatly expanding its range of applications.
Main application areas of Sodium-treated PTFE film

Composite Diaphragms: This is one of the most important applications. Laminated diaphragms are produced by vulcanizing and bonding the film with elastomers (such as rubber). Used in equipment like pumps and valves, these diaphragms leverage both the corrosion resistance of PTFE and the elasticity of rubber—for instance, as core components in diaphragm valves.
Specialty Tapes:High-performance PTFE pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) tapes are created by applying adhesive to the treated side of the film. These tapes combine the non-stick and high-temperature resistance of PTFE with the ability to adhere securely, much like standard tapes.
Industrial and Electronic Components: Used for sealing gaskets in corrosive environments, sliding components requiring oil-free lubrication, and insulation parts in the electronics and electrical sectors.

Available in various forms; thicknesses can be as low as 0.015 mm, and widths can be customized. For example, the DeWAL DW 212 model is a standard single-sided Sodium-treated PTFE skived film.
