PTFE gasket: key material in the sealing field

20 - Aug - 2025

In numerous industrial fields, the performance of sealing materials plays a crucial role in the safe and stable operation of equipment. As a high-performance sealing material, PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) gaskets are widely used in the chemical, petroleum, and pharmaceutical industries due to their exceptional properties.

PTFE gasket: key material in the sealing field

PTFE, also known as polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), is known as the "King of Plastics" for its exceptional performance. It is manufactured from PTFE rods, tubes, and sheets through mechanical turning or cutting, or through die pressing and high-temperature vulcanization to create molded PTFE gaskets. PTFE, a polymer compound formed by the polymerization of tetrafluoroethylene, possesses a range of excellent properties.

Chemical stability is the hallmark of PTFE gaskets. With the exception of molten sodium and liquid fluorine, it is resistant to corrosion by virtually all chemicals. It is impervious to strong acids (such as sulfuric acid and hydrochloric acid), strong bases (such as sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide), aqua regia, and various organic solvents. This property makes PTFE gaskets an ideal sealing option for industries with demanding media corrosion requirements, such as the chemical, pharmaceutical, and petroleum industries. In chemical production, many reactions involve highly corrosive chemicals. PTFE gaskets effectively prevent the leakage of these media, ensuring a safe and stable production process.

PTFE gaskets also offer excellent high and low temperature resistance. They maintain excellent performance over a wide temperature range, operating for extended periods of time in temperatures ranging from -180°C to 260°C. In high-temperature environments, such as those found in high-temperature pipe connections within oil refining plants, PTFE gaskets do not soften, deform, or lose their sealing properties. In low-temperature environments, such as those found in seals on refrigeration equipment, they do not become brittle, maintaining excellent flexibility and sealing effectiveness.

Their low coefficient of friction makes PTFE gaskets excellent for sealing applications that require frequent opening and closing, such as valves. They are also non-sticky and relatively easy to install and remove, significantly reducing the difficulty and cost of equipment maintenance. Furthermore, PTFE gaskets offer high cleanliness, meeting the stringent hygiene standards of industries such as food and pharmaceuticals. They can be used in sealing applications where contamination is unacceptable, ensuring product quality and safety.

PTFE gaskets are used in a wide range of industries. In the chemical industry, PTFE gaskets are widely used in flange connections of pipes, valves, pumps, pressure vessels, heat exchangers, and other equipment, effectively preventing the leakage of various chemical media. In the petroleum industry, from crude oil extraction to oil refining, PTFE gaskets play a critical sealing role in various equipment, ensuring the smooth operation of the oil production process. In the pharmaceutical industry, due to their non-toxic and clean properties, PTFE gaskets are widely used to seal pharmaceutical production equipment, ensuring that drugs are not contaminated. In the food processing industry, whether it is food production equipment or pipelines, PTFE gaskets can safeguard food hygiene and safety.

In recent years, with the continuous advancement of technology and the rapid development of industry, the performance requirements for PTFE gaskets have become increasingly higher. Some companies have continuously researched and innovated, adding various fillers such as glass fiber, graphite, molybdenum disulfide, and bronze powder to traditional PTFE gaskets to improve their performance. Adding glass fiber increases the gasket's strength and hardness, enhancing its wear resistance; adding graphite further reduces the coefficient of friction and improves thermal conductivity; adding molybdenum disulfide enhances the gasket's self-lubricating properties; and bronze powder improves its compressive strength. These modified PTFE gaskets offer significant performance improvements, better meeting the sealing requirements of various industries and operating conditions.

As a key material in the sealing industry, PTFE gaskets play an irreplaceable role in numerous industrial sectors due to their exceptional chemical stability, high and low temperature resistance, and low friction coefficient. With continuous technological innovation and expanding application areas, the market prospects for PTFE gaskets will continue to expand, promising to provide more reliable sealing solutions for the development of various industries.
